Worried your superannuation isn't being paid? Here's how to find out, and what steps to take next.

If you suspect your employer is not paying your super, or not paying the correct amount, you're not alone, and you're not powerless. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) takes unpaid super seriously and will investigate your claim if it's valid.

Step 1: Speak With Your Employer

Start by asking your employer:

  • How often they are paying your super

  • Which super fund they’re paying into

  • How much they’ve paid so far

It's best to clarify this when you start a new job, but it's never too late to raise the question.

Step 2: Check With Your Super Fund

Log into your super fund account or check your most recent member statement to see if your employer's contributions have been received. You can also contact your super fund directly for confirmation.

Step 3: Still Missing Super? Lodge an Enquiry

If you've spoken with your employer and checked with your fund but still believe your super hasn't been paid (or hasn’t been paid to your nominated fund), you can report it to the ATO by:

  • Using the ATO's Employee Superannuation Guarantee (SG) calculator tool

  • Calling the ATO on 13 10 20

What the ATO Will Ask You

When lodging an unpaid super enquiry, be prepared to provide:

  • Your contact details, and permission to use your name with your employer

  • Your employer’s contact details and ABN

  • Employment details, including your start date

  • A description of the issue, including the months or years affected

You’ll also need to confirm whether you:

  • Earned at least $450 before tax in any month (prior to 1 July 2022; no minimum applies after this date)

  • Checked with both your employer and super fund to confirm no payment was made

  • Were offered a super fund choice form and when

  • Checked if your employer acted on your chosen fund

The ATO will keep you informed of your case progress via letter.
