Faster Hosting = Better Performance
We’ve recently upgraded our website hosting to a cloud VPS solution with vps.net. The result? Our site now runs four times faster than it did on our previous shared hosting environment.
Previously, we’d noticed that our site speed metrics were gradually getting worse. Pages were lagging, load times were up, and that’s bad news both for user experience and search engine rankings.
The Problem With Shared Hosting
With shared hosting, your website shares server resources with potentially hundreds of others. If just one of those sites gets a spike in traffic—or slowly becomes more resource-heavy—it can affect the performance of your site without you even knowing it.
That’s exactly what was happening to us.
Why We Chose Cloud VPS Over Dedicated Hosting
We briefly considered a dedicated server, but the cost was much higher and still not as flexible. VPS cloud hosting offers scalability, better resource control, and greater uptime reliability at a much more affordable price point.
It’s a smart upgrade, especially for professional firms like ours that rely on fast, secure access to information.
What About Hosting in Australia?
One of the reasons we hesitated initially was the common misconception that you need to host your site in Australia to rank well on Google.com.au.
This is no longer true, if your domain is a .com.au, Google automatically associates it with Australia, regardless of where the server is located. They only use the physical hosting location when your site has a generic TLD like .com.
You can also specify your target country in Google Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools). While Google says this is a signal, it may or may not override other factors.
SEO Bonus: Site Speed Matters
Google has confirmed that site speed is part of its ranking algorithm. While it’s not the most important factor, a slow site can negatively impact your search visibility—especially if it’s significantly underperforming.
For us, our website had become slow enough that it might have been hurting our SEO. This move to cloud hosting not only improved performance for users but may also give us a slight boost in Google rankings.
Final Thoughts
We’ve seen a marked improvement in both performance and consistency with VPS hosting. If you’re running a business website and have outgrown shared hosting, it’s worth looking into cloud options. You’ll likely be surprised at how affordable it is, and how much smoother everything runs.
