OnlyFans Tax Deductions in Australia: What can you Claim

If you earn money on OnlyFans, the ATO treats you as running a business. That means tax on what you earn, but it also means you can claim the costs of earning it. Most creators we meet are either missing deductions they're entitled to, or claiming things that won't survive an ATO review. This guide covers both.

The BASICS
How the ATO decides what you can claim
An expense is generally deductible if you spent the money to earn your OnlyFans income. If something is used partly for content and partly in your personal life, you can only claim the work-use share. You also need records to back up every claim.

Do I also use it privately?
If so, what percentage is work use?

Common Deductions
Common deductions for OnlyFans creators
Here are the most common expenses we see creators claiming, and how they generally work.

Equipment
Cameras, lenses, ring lights, lighting kits, tripods, microphones and backdrops are all claimable when used for content. More expensive items may need to be claimed over several years rather than all at once, depending on the cost and your business set-up. We'll work out the best treatment for you.

Phone, internet and computer
rarely 100% work use. Keep a record of your usage for a typical four-week period to set a fair work-use percentage, then claim that share.

Software and subscriptions
Editing apps, scheduling tools, cloud storage, watermarking software and design tools used for your content are generally deductible.

Props and Sets
Props, set decorations and items bought specifically to feature in your content can generally be claimed when they're used for content rather than kept for personal use.

Help you pay for
Payments to editors, photographers, chatters, assistants or a management agency are generally deductible business expenses. Keep invoices or agreements for each.

Accounting and professional fees
Fees for tax advice and preparing your tax return are deductible.
The Home STUDIO question
Can you claim your home studio?
Many creators film at home, and this is where claims often go wrong.
If you use part of your home to create content, you can generally claim running costs like electricity for the time you work there, using either a fixed hourly rate or your actual costs.
Claiming a share of your rent, mortgage interest or rates is different. That generally requires an area set aside exclusively for your business, like a dedicated studio room that isn't also your bedroom. If you own your home, a claim like this can also affect the capital gains tax exemption on your home when you sell. It's worth getting advice before making one.
OUtfits, costumes and everyday clothing
Can you claim outfits and costumes?
This is the question we're asked most, and the rules are stricter than most creators expect. Clothing that could reasonably be worn in everyday life is generally treated as private, even if you bought it for content and only wear it on camera.
Genuine costumes and character outfits that aren't everyday wear are in a better position.
Because this area is often misunderstood, talk to us before claiming outfits.
